Waste & fleet operations

The problem

The operation behind the application.

A waste operation coordinates planning teams, vehicles, collection points and customer service. A route change, collection event or service enquiry needs to be understood in the context of the same operation. The project addresses that connection between work in the field and the information used by dispatch and back-office teams.

The solution

A connected software scope.

The software scope brings route planning, fleet tracking, IoT sensor integration, a customer self-service portal and operational reporting into a connected system. Collection information is associated with its route, vehicle and service context. Each interface has an operational responsibility: capture a field event, make it visible to the relevant team or carry it into a report.

  • Route planning and fleet visibility
  • IoT sensor-informed collection workflows
  • Customer self-service portal
  • Operational and environmental reporting

Functional scope

What the project connects.

Dispatch and field context

Route and fleet workflows describe where a collection belongs and the vehicle involved. Location and sensor integrations are part of the published project scope; equipment coverage and operating behaviour must be evaluated in the relevant environment.

Customer and service workflows

The customer portal provides a separate interface to the service process. Portal actions need to remain connected to the underlying operational record so that the service team can follow an enquiry in context.

Reporting from operational records

Operational and environmental reporting use the information gathered across the workflow. A report is useful when the team can trace its figures back to the source event and investigate missing or corrected records.

Acceptance approach

Follow the record. Check the result.

A meaningful acceptance path follows the business record through the connected workflow. These are the checks relevant to evaluating this scope.

  1. Follow a collection record from planning to the field update and the relevant report.
  2. Check route, vehicle and collection identities across integration boundaries.
  3. Exercise unavailable connectivity, missing sensor data and a corrected event.
  4. Agree the expected report values with the operations team.

Project scope note
